Homemade New England Clam Chowder

Our Favorite Summer Meal

In August we loaded the family up and ventured up to New England for an end of summer vacation. Our first stop was Narragansett, Rhode Island to visit friends. If you haven’t been you should add it to your bucket list because this beautiful ocean destination is one of a kind. Fishing, boating and swimming are some of the great activities that kept 4 adults and 5 children busy. However everyone’s favorite part of the trip was digging up clams off the dock and making homemade New England Clam Chowder.

At low tide everyone walked into the ocean up to their waist and you dug around with your feet to find clams. It didn’t take long before all of the kids had found multiple clams. In actuality it took about 15 minutes and as a group we had dug up 4 dozen Quahog Clams.

While our friend Alison occupied the kids by catching shrimp, crabs, snails and other forms of sea life we boiled the clams, cut up the vegetables and followed Ina Garten’s recipe to make homemade clam chowder.
